Bad Maths Ends Weeding
An Indian bride walked out of her wedding ceremony after the groom was unable to solve a simple maths problem.
Just moments before they said 'I do', the bride asked her would-be husband to add 15 + 6 and his answer was 17 and that clearly wasn't good enough for the young lady so she walked out, leaving him at the altar.
The groom's family tried to persuade the bride to reconsider, but she refused, believing that the groom had misled her about his education.
Given that this was an arranged marriage in Nothern India, where the couple rarely gets to know each other before the wedding apart from brief meetings, it is easy to understand how little they would know about each other.
"The groom’s family kept us in the dark about his poor education," said Mohar Singh, the bride’s father, to the Associated Press.
“It was a very embarrassing situation for all of us as we had come with all preparations and it was a matter of social prestige as well. We have been cheated,” Singh said.
Local police were called in to mediate between the families and both sides returned all the gifts and jewelry that had been exchanged before the wedding, officer Rakesh Kumar said.
Last month, another bride in the same region of India, Uttar Pradesh, married a wedding guest after the original groom had a seizure and collapsed at the wedding venue.
The groom's family had not revealed that the groom was epileptic. While the groom was rushed to a hospital in Rampur town, the bride asked one of the wedding guests to step in and married him.
